Although the world remains under the threat of the new coronavirus (COVID-19), living with the pandemic has already become the new normal, meaning that protective gears will remain a must have for most people. Against this backdrop, the development of innovative, yet environmentally-friendly protective textiles are poised to become mainstream in the future.

With this observation in mind, the Textile Export Promotion Project (TEPP), led by the Taiwan Textile Federation (TTF), has made Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) one of the highlights on its official website and online seminars, putting the epidemic prevention and R&D capabilities of Taiwan’s textile industry in the spotlight.

When it comes to sustainable textiles, the Taiwan Textile Federation has recommended four manufacturers, including Creative Tech Textile Co., Ltd. which has developed new materials with 6-in-1 functions. Among other highlights, the company has developed the Seawool yarn, staple yarn/long fiber yarn and fabrics featuring low heat conduction and high moisture absorption coefficient, as well as far-infrared radiation, antibacterial, deodorant and anti-UV properties.

Men-Chuen Fibre Industry Co., Ltd. is also promoting its eco-friendly knitted fabric made of Ombre yarn this year. The latter, which is made of different shades of Dope Dyed Yarn, has rich color variations for which it has obtained international certifications such as bluesign and GRS (Global Recycle Standard).

Nam Liong Enterprise Co., Ltd., on the other hand, has launched the X-SlipTex brand of recycled materials in response to the soaring demand from international brands for products that conform to the concept of circular economy. The milled recycled sponge foam granules are coated on the 100% recycled PET bottle woven fabric to achieve a better anti-slip and wear-resistance effect. This unique industrial process gives new life to recycled sponge and recycled PET bottles, creating new values and helping the company obtaining the GRS global recycling standard certification.

Taiwan Paiho Co., Ltd. has also considered the basic requirements of global apparel and sports products in recent years while emphasizing the latest fashion trends. In addition to being non-toxic and non-harmful, the company’s products are also certified for low water and carbon footprints. Taiwan Paiho’s environmentally-friendly materials are also innovative, such as the PET recycled yarn and ocean recycled yarn that meet the needs of international brands.

With the advent of the post-epidemic era, antibacterial and anti-virus protective gear that feature moisture control, waterproof and breathable features, and are UV resistant and far-infrared compatible, while providing heat storage and regulation, and deodorizing are poised to revolutionize the industry.

Such compound functional woven and knitted fabrics will become a must for the outdoor, sports, leisure, and functional fashion in the future, thanks to special yarns and multi-functional textiles that can help reduce dyeing waste water, offer biodegradable and recycled functionalities and reduce carbon emissions.

Such innovations are the most anticipated positive energy and bright spot for Taiwan’s textile industry in the post-epidemic era.
